Antifragile Kids in Discover Mode!
Stephanie Sayre • October 15, 2024

"All children are by nature antifragile. Just as the immune system must be exposed to germs, and trees must be exposed to wind, children require exposure to setbacks, failures, shocks, and stumbles in order to develop strength and self-reliance."  Jonathan Haidt, The Anxious Generation, p. 93

Discover mode encourages kids to explore, take some risks, and learn about themselves. Children gain confidence and resilience by facing challenges, problem solving, and perhaps even overcoming.

In last week's parent discussion of The Anxious Generation, it was pointed out that "discover mode" also applies to intellectual and social-emotional learning. Conflict and learning to resolve it, a science experiment failure, getting the wrong answer for a math equation and trying it again - all of these are learning and growth experiences!
