Community Montessori School

Isabella M.

Attended CMS: 2007-2013

Isabella, a strong advocate of following one’s passions, is currently working on her dream of pursuing a career in illustration.

Q: How long were you at CMS?

A: I attended CMS from the age of four and stayed all the way up to fourth grade.

Q: Where are you now?

A: I am in my senior year at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.  I'm working on a bachelor's degree in fine arts with a focus on illustration.

Q: Describe some of your memorable moments as a student.

A: The first thing that comes to mind is the cultural fair.  I remember being with my mom, and we made a little stand for Brazil because I'm Brazilian. We walked around and looked at everyone else's stands. It was such a fun day. I also remember Heroes from History. I told the story of Ruby Bridges. I was so inspired by her story that I named my dog after her because I loved her so much.

Q: Describe your transition to traditional school.

A: I went to Austin Montessori for a short time and then to Meridian. Austin Montessori’s teaching style was the same but Meridian was interesting because I wasn’t familiar with homework. They had a fixed schedule and the teacher told us what to do. But I feel I adapted quickly.

Q: How did CMS prepare you for middle school and high school?

A:  The aspect of dictating your own responsibilities helped me. I feel like I'm a much more organized person because of it. I can figure out my priorities and what I need to do.

Q: What interests did you pursue while you were at CMS? Are you still working on those passions?

A: I loved and pursued drawing. And now, I hope to graduate with my bachelor’s in fine arts.  I also enjoyed writing and researching all through my time at CMS, and I continue to love it. I still love to learn about everything in general. I like to sit down and figure out things about science and astronomy.

Q: How do you think your Montessori education prepared you for life?

A: Montessori allowed me to fully love what I was learning about and love the world around me.

Q: Do you have advice for our current CMS adolescent students?

A: You are capable. It will be different when you leave. But you will adapt. You will be able to figure it out. There are always people to help you as well. Pursue your interests regardless of what they are. It doesn't matter if they're considered or deemed unworthy. I'm very grateful that my parents let me pursue mine. But even if your parents are not supportive or people in your life are not supportive,) you should still continue to pursue your interests.
